The institution became the East Alabama Male College in 1856 after 20 years of it coming into being. The school became the first land-grant college as per the Merrill Act of 1872. Consequently, its name has been changed to Agriculture and Mechanical College of Alabama. In 1899, its name has been changed to Alabama Polytechnic Institute. In 1960, it was finally changed to the present name of Auburn University.The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges recognized the university to award bachelor’s, master’s, doctorate and professional degrees.
