It was established as a private and research university in the North Carolina State in 1828 with Durham as its nucleus. It has campus spread over 8600 acres. It is ranked number seven among the wealthy private universities in the USA. It also ranked number seven among the universities that spend more on research. Among the list of universities that produced Rhodes, Truman, Goldwater and Udall scholars, the university ranked number five. The US News and World Report ranked the university as the eighth among the list of Best Colleges in National Universities 2016. According to the Fall 2015 statistics, the university has 14,190 students and 3428 full-time faculty members. The student to teacher ratio is 8:1. Among the students, 49 per cent are females and 51 per cent males. About 90 per cent of the teaching staff has PhD and post-doctoral degrees. The institution was founded in 1838 in Trinity with the name of Brown’s School House. In 1841, it was named Union Institute Academy; in 1851 it was named as Normal College and in 1859 it was named Trinity College. In 1892, it was shifted to Durham. On account of the charity from the Dukes the educational institution thrived. With the establishment of a foundation titled The Duke’s Endowments the Trinity college went on to become a University. Afterwards, it progressed as a full-scale university.
