The Georgia Technological University was established in 1885 as a public university at Atlanta. Its main campus spread over a sprawling 400-acre site. It has membership in the University System of Georgia. It has satellite campuses in Savanna of Georgia state, Metz in France, Athlon in Ireland and Shanghai in China. In the list of the top public universities prepared by the US News and World Report the Georgia Technological University ranked number seven. The payscale.com portal ranked the university number one under its annual returns on investment section. According to 2014 fall season statistics, the university has 23,109 students and 1,117 full-time teaching staff. Females constitute 30.16 per cent of the students while males constitute 69.84 per cent. The teacher student ratio of the university classes is about 1:19. In fact, 94.4% of the teaching staff has either PhD or post-doctoral degrees. The institution was set up on October 13, 1885 with the name Georgia School of Technology. In 1952, the first girl student was given admission in the university. In 1948, it changed its name to Georgia Technological University. In 1961, it admitted African-American students without the intervention of the court. Over a period of time, it expanded its course base and progressed.
